Congrats – quitting your day job to focus on your art is an exciting transition!

 

Yes, it can also be a bit of a shock and challenging to plan for. Don’t worry, there are a few ways to get ready for it. So, let’s talk about how to sell your art, especially if you haven’t done it before or made many sales before.

My suggestions include three actions to prepare you for quitting your day job.

First of all, when quitting your job, know what happens to your finances.

I understand it sounds obvious, but too many artists just make the leap without any safety net. Don’t be the guy (or gal)! I’d like to offer some suggestions to help you prepare for turning in your notice.

In order to meet your expenses, how much money do you need to earn per week?

It doesn’t matter what you make now, but what would you need to make to support yourself? Most of us have some expenditures we could decrease or eliminate if necessary.

Now is the time to start cutting those areas.

When you have to make those cuts, not only will you be better prepared, but you will also save money, which will give you more cushion when you quit your day job.

Are you willing to take a part-time or temp job while you ramp up?

For those who are not ready to create commercially marketable pieces right away or who are afraid their muse will abandon them if they have to make money, a part-time job at Starbucks may be a good idea. On the other hand, if you’re gung-ho and ready to roll, well done! If you can start marketing your art right away, you’ve got a good shot.

You can sell your art while working your day job

Do some research and learn as much as you can before your livelihood depends on it.

Second, make sales by marketing your artwork.

For artists, sales start with marketing.

Tell them about your art AND how they can buy it from you. So how do you do that?

You can learn from successful artists. If you can, list ideas and strategies for marketing that you can copy and begin experimenting with now. Don’t worry about making mistakes, by learning from your mistakes and those of other artists in your space, you can avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

Learn how to use social media 

If you haven’t used social media to market your art yet, now is the time to do it. Instagram and Pinterest are two of the most visual social media platforms, and they’re great places to start.

Discover who’s excelled with this platform and learn from them. Build your audience now and start engaging with them before you quit your day job.

Create an artist website

Many artists opt for a more powerful website. I recommend checking out WordPress.org and Squarespace. Website building sites such as Wix and Weekly are easy to use at first. 

My experience with sites like Siteground or Fast Comet has been much better than GoDaddy.

A third step is to prepare a business plan for creating art.
 
You and your audience will benefit from this strategy since it tells a story and allows them to feel invested in your journey through the series creation! So this is the most important part. Do some research and plan it out first.
